UN Migration Agency (IOM)’s Global Migration Data Analysis Center (GMDAC) trains the Egyptian Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) Migration Data Collection and Analysis

Cairo, 07-08 November  IOM Egypt, in cooperation with the IOM Global Migration Data Analysis Center (GMDAC) based in Berlin, delivered a training on “International Migration Data Sources and Migration Data for SDG Monitoring” for 13 officials of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). The training program was tailored to fit the specific needs of CAPMAS, the leading public agency on data collection, analysis, and sharing in Egypt. The training also includes a session on data related to the monitoring and reporting on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The sessions took place in the context of the “Preventing and Responding to Irregular Migration in Egypt (PRIME) Project, funded by the government of the United Kingdom. The interactive nature of the sessions encourages participants to present challenges to migration data collection, and discuss potential strategies to overcome them.

The training is one of the ongoing IOM activities supporting CAPMAS to strengthen its capacities for collecting, analyzing and sharing migration data. It builds on previous cooperation between the two institutions such as the organization of the World Statistical Day in 2015, the undertaking of the first Egypt Household International Migration Survey, launched in 2016, the establishment of a Migration Data Analysis Unit at CAPMAS in early 2017 as well as previous training of CAPMAS staff on how to conduct forecasts for labour migration carried out during 2016 and 2017.

The trainings support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 16: “Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies”, Goal 10.7: “Facilitate orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration and mobility of people, including through the implementation of planned and well-managed migration policies”, and Goal 17: “Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development”. The initiative is also in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030 of a fair interdependent society characterized by equal economic, social, political rights and opportunities realizing social inclusion.
