UN Migration Agency (IOM) Trains the Migration Data Analysis Unit of CAPMAS on Migration and Development
Cairo, 12 April -The International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducted a capacity building workshop on Migration and Development for the Migration Data Analysis Unit (MDAU) at the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). IOM Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC) supported the workshop, where the GMDAC expert highlighted the importance of linking migration indicators to the development indicators in the 2030 Agenda. The workshop aimed at enhancing the understanding of the MDAU team on the importance of migration and the development indicators to support informed decision making.
The workshop falls within the framework of Preventing and Responding to Irregular Migration in Egypt (PRIME) project, which aims to consolidate integrated and multidisciplinary government responses to irregular migration under a right-based approach in light of the substantial flows of irregular migrants to and through Egypt, as well as towards Europe. The workshop contributes to a certain extent to the fulfillment of output 1.1.1, namely, “Relevant national agencies, such as CAPMAS, have the skills and resources to conduct periodic assessments and analysis of complex migratory flows”.
The project is an attempt to support the Egyptian government’s commitments specified in the Valletta Declaration to “scale up joint efforts in preventing and fighting migrants smuggling, eradicating trafficking in human beings […],” and to “strengthen the fight against organized criminal networks, including their links to terrorism, through effective border management, enhanced cooperation and the implementation of the relevant legal and institutional frameworks.”
