UN Migration Agency (IOM) Supports the Organization of the Trilateral Thematic Meeting on Trafficking and Smuggling of People, Focusing on Unaccompanied Minors

Luxor, 08-09 November - The Arab Republic of Egypt hosts the first tripartite meeting between countries, which are parties of three regional processes on migration: the EU-Khartoum Process, the Rabat Process and the AU-Horn of Africa Initiative. The meeting is held in Luxor City (Egypt) and 34 African and European countries participate in the event.

The event is also attended by representatives from AU Commission, EU Commission, Europol, Frontex, the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), Interpol, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Through a US-funded project, IOM supports the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the organization of the first meeting of this kind. In addition, IOM takes an active role being the designated rapporteur of the session focusing on unaccompanied minors, as well as in delivering a presentation on the Global Compact on Migration (GCM), with a specific focus on human trafficking, migrant smuggling and unaccompanied migrant children, by Ms. Phyllis Coven, the IOM Policy and Liaison Advisor on Global Compacts.

Relevant inputs on the issues of smuggling and trafficking of migrants and unaccompanied minors deriving from the meeting and will be beneficial for each of three regional processes as well as for the contributions to the drafting of the GCM.

The activity supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 16 (Peace, justice and strong institutions) and Goal 17 (Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development). The initiative is also in line with the ‘Egypt Vision 2030’ for a fair interdependent society characterized by equal economic, social, political rights and opportunities realizing social inclusion.
