UN Migration Agency (IOM) Egypt Announces the First Regional Edition of the Certificate in Migration Governance

Cairo, April 25 -The UN Migration Agency (IOM) in Egypt, in partnership with the American University in Cairo’s Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (AUC/CMRS), is organizing the first regional edition of the Certificate in Migration Governance, which is planned to take place in Cairo from 22 to 30 September 2018. Up to 30 State officials from the MENA region will attend a nine-day intensive learning programme covering the key areas of migration governance, ranging from migration law to migration and emergencies.

Since 2016, 57 Egyptian governmental official and non-governmental representatives graduated after completing a six-module learning programme on migration governance, co-delivered by professors from the American University in Cairo (AUC) and IOM practitioners, with the support of the governments of Italy, United states of America, United Kingdom and the European Union.

Quotes from previous participants:

“During this learning programme we learnt that migration offers both challenges and opportunities for migrants and host communities. The training taught me how to link migration to sustainable development and inspired me for a new project idea that I will further elaborate once I will go back to work”.

This learning experience was an exceptional opportunity to explore the topic of migration, along with its laws and latest developments. I found helpful how the courses present all partner organizations concerned with migration and the roles they play in migrants’ lives. It was also very useful to understand the situation of refugees, in terms of how they integrate and contribute to society”.

The certificate in migration governance supports the Government of Egypt in its commitment to “elaborate and implement a comprehensive national and regional strategies on migration and mobility” (Action Plan of the Valletta Summit on Migration, Nov. 2015) as well as to become “a fair interdependent society characterized by equal economic, social, political rights and opportunities realizing social inclusion” by 2030 (Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy, Social Justice Pillar).
