Cairo, 29 March - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) of Egypt launched the ‘Egypt Labour Market Report: Demographic trends, labour market evolution and scenarios for the period 2015-2030’. The report launch was hosted by CAPMAS and attended by representatives of ministries and international organizations. The report, the first of its kind to be conducted by CAPMAS, combined  demographic and labour market data to create forecasts on labour market needs in Egypt and four selected European Union member states: Germany, United Kingdom, France, and Italy.

The report emphasizes the structural excess of labour that Egypt will witness, as opposed to an expected shortage of labour supply in some of the European labour markets. In this light, migration is a necessity, whereby governments on both shores of the Mediterranean need to cooperate on managing migration flows and establishing regular and safe routes for labour mobility, in accordance with Target 10.7 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ‘Facilitate orderly, safe, and responsible migration and mobility of people, including through implementation of planned and well-managed migration policies’.

Co-authored by Michele Bruni, Professor at the Centre for the Analysis of Public Policies, University of Modena, and the team of the Migration Data Analysis Unit (MDAU), the report comes as part of a capacity strengthening exercise under the “Developing Capacities for Forecasting and Planning Migration Across the Mediterranean” project, funded by the IOM Development Fund , which supports Egypt to better plan for and maximize the potential of demand-driven migration.

The Migration Data Analysis Unit (MDAU) of CAPMAS was established in 2017 under the aforementioned initiative to support Egypt’s efforts in line with Target 17.18 to ‘enhance capacity building support to developing countries, including for LDCs and SIDS, to increase significantly the availability of high quality, timely and reliable data, disaggregated by income, gender, age, race, ethnicity, migratory status, disability, geographic location and other characteristics relevant in national contexts.
