UN Migration Agency (IOM) Conducts the Second Training for Journalists and Media Professionals on Countering Trafficking in Persons

Cairo, 15 - 16 November 2017. IOM Egypt and the National Coordination Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM&TIP) organized a two-day training on Countering Trafficking in Persons through Media for 16 professionals representing 12 institutions. The training programme included an introduction on migration terminology and specialized sessions on countering trafficking in persons with a focus on victim protection. Training sessions were led by representatives from the North Africa Mixed Migration Hub, IOM Egypt, NCCPIM&TIP, National Council for Childhood and Motherhood and media experts.

“Media professionals are an important source to raise the awareness of the public on this crime that violates basic human rights. It is therefore crucial to accurately relay the right terminology through an in-depth understanding of this phenomenon,” said Mr. Andrea DABIZZI, Head of Programmes of the Migrant Assistance Division at IOM Egypt.

The trainings support the implementation of the 2016-2021 National Strategy for Preventing and Combatting Trafficking in Persons of Egypt and of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). The initiative is also in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for a fair interdependent society characterized by equal economic, social, political rights and opportunities realizing social inclusion. The trainings are implemented with the generous support of the European Union.
