Cairo, 25 November 2016 - IOM and the Egyptian Ministry of Interior (MoI) organized a training of trainers for 17 government officials from 13 to 24 November 2016 on passport examination procedures in order to strengthen security procedures at Egyptian border entry and exit points.

Participants acquired the necessary skills to train frontline immigration officers on procedures and techniques to verify identification documents using specialized equipment.

“This training is part of a series of interventions with the Government of Egypt to strengthen national capacities to safeguard Egyptian entry and exit points. It complements IOM’s efforts to establish a national referral mechanism to meet the protection concerns of migrants in Egypt,” said IOM Egypt Head of Office Amr Taha.

The training is the fourth in a series organized by IOM and the MoI. The process has included identifying suitable trainers and will see the roll out of trainings to other officers in the coming months. Support also includes the development of a manual to institutionalize training for frontline officers.

The training has been funded by the Government of Japan as part of an IOM project Strengthening Technical and Operational Practices to Address Irregular Migration at Egyptian Entry and Exit Points. The project also supports the improvement of infrastructure and provides equipment needed at entry and exit points.
