IOM Supports 10th Annual International Conference on Forensic Medicine and Sciences
Hurghada, 11 April 2019 – The 10th Annual International Conference on Forensic Medicine and Sciences was held from 9 to 11 April in Hurghada, Egypt. This was an opportunity for members of the Arab Union of Forensics and Toxicology, the Egyptian Forensic Authority, scientists and related experts to come together to discuss education, training and practice of forensics in humanitarian settings.
The conference was organized by the Arab Union of Forensics and Toxicology under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Health and hosted speakers from international academic institutions, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Doctors without Borders (MSF), and experts from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Mr. Nelson Goncalves, from IOM’s African Capacity Building Centre, held a special workshop on forgery and passport examination that demonstrated to participants methods of document examination and verification that can be used in the prevention of trafficking and smuggling of persons.
"IOM is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and societies. For more than three decades, IOM has been engaged in combating smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons, by cooperating with governments, civil society, migrant community organizations, media, research institutes and private sector” said Mr. Laurent De Boeck, IOM Egypt’s Chief of Mission in his opening remarks for the conference.
The trainings were implemented with the contribution of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The trainings and conference support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals. It is also in line with the objectives of Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS): Vision 2030, particularly its social justice pillar, and the National Strategies for Combatting Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons.
