Cairo– To mark the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, the International Organization for Migration organized a community event on Saturday 28^th of July in close collaboration with the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM) and Tadamon at the Swiss Club in Imbaba.

IOM, NCCM and Tadamon welcomed more than 700 Egyptians and migrants from the Sudanese, Eritrean, Somali, Yemeni, Iraqi and Syrian communities. The event presented an educational experience under the theme of “I Know My Right” and featured several thematic stations as well as informational activities for children and families. The activities focused on raising awareness among migrant and host communities on the issue of trafficking in persons.

The event featured a photography exhibition portraying volunteers from migrant and host communities in Egypt shedding light on their rights in order to increase awareness about trafficking in persons. Additionally, Asia Madani, a Sudanese vocalist and percussionist residing in Cairo, together with her music group, presented a musical performance featuring songs dedicated to raise awareness on the issue of trafficking in persons.

“IOM Egypt recognizes the importance of raising awareness about the issue of trafficking in persons – the event provided communities an opportunity to participate in active learning stations as well as to find out information about the services that IOM offers.” says Kristiina Wells, IOM's Counter-traffikcing project manager. 

This event was made possible with the generous support of the European Union (EU), US Agency for International Development (USAID), the US Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM), the Embassy of Denmark in Cairo, and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.

The community engagement event supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, namely Goal 3: Good Health and well-being, Goal 10: Reduced inequalities, Goal 16: Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals. It is also in line with the Egypt Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS): 2030 Vision, namely the Social Justice Pillar: “By 2030, Egypt is a fair interdependent society characterized by equal economic, social, political rights and opportunities realizing social inclusion. A society that provides protection, and support to marginalized and vulnerable groups”.
