Cairo, 20 January 2019 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and its national partners, the National Coordinating Committee on Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM & TIP) and the Office of the Prosecutor General (OPG), kicked off a series of trainings strengthening the capacities of Prosecutors in counter trafficking in persons. In line with the 3Ps + 1 Paradigm – prosecution, protection, and prevention plus partnership –, this series of trainings strengthens the knowledge of Egyptian prosecutors investigating and prosecuting trafficking in persons crimes.

“We are starting today a training which is part of a long-term programme where we bring together Egypt’s prosecutors to highlight the legal frameworks within the country. Egypt should be proud of its Counter Trafficking Law, that is unique and extremely well-developed,” said Laurent De Boeck, Chief of Mission of IOM Egypt, while inaugurating the first of the series of trainings.

The training sessions cover relevant international and national legal instruments, such as the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crim; its supplementary Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children; the Egyptian Counter-Trafficking Law 64/2010; in addition to the National Strategy on Counter Trafficking in Persons, and international judicial cooperation. Furthermore, the training equips the prosecutors with core skills relevant to crime investigation, including evidence collection, victim and witness protection safeguards. to the participants also discuss practical case studies and best practices from national and international contexts.

The first training was made possible by the contribution from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The training contributes to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) namely Goal 10 ‘Reduced Inequalities’, Goal 16 ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’ and Goal 17 ‘Partnerships for the Goals’. The training series is also in line with the objectives of Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS): Vision 2030, particularly its Social Justice Pillar.
