IOM Holds a Workshop on Irregular Migration Data for Senior Officials from the Egyptian Government

Cairo, 12 February 2019 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with IOM’s Global Migration Data Analysis Center (GMDAC), delivered a workshop on Irregular Migration Data at the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

The workshop, held on 12 and 13 February 2019 at CAPMAS, was provided to 21 senior officials from various government counterparts. Participants included the Ministry of State for Emigration and Egyptian Expatriate Affairs, the National Coordinating Committee for Preventing and Combating Illegal migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM&TiP), the Institute of Statistical Studies and Research (ISSR) at Cairo University, and the National Centre for Social and Criminological Studies. Topics of the workshop included proposed methodologies on data collection and analysis for policy development, theories and definitions of irregular migration, international sources for migration data, introduction to IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), and data trends in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region.

The workshop was conducted in the framework of the Preventing and Responding to Irregular Migration in Egypt (PRIME) project, which consolidates integrated and multidisciplinary government responses to irregular migration under a rights-based approach.

The workshop is aimed to increase the availability of high-quality, timely and reliable data disaggregated by income, gender, age, race, ethnicity, migratory status, disability, geographic location and other characteristics relevant in national contexts.

The workshop is in line with Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy: Vision 2030 and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 10: Reduced inequalities, Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities and Goal 17: Partnerships for the goals.
