Cairo, 21 March 2019 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in partnership with the National Centre for Judicial Studies of the Ministry of Justice of Egypt and the National Coordinating Committee on Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM & TIP), completed a series of eight trainings for judges on countering the crimes of trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants since 2017. The most recent training was held in Ismailia from 19 to 21 March for 24 judges who serve in the Northern region of Egypt.

In line with the 3Ps + 1 Paradigm (Prosecution, Protection, and Prevention plus Partnership) the training strengthens the knowledge of the Egyptian judiciary on national and international legal frameworks, protocols and standards. The trainings were delivered by two expert Egyptian judges to 154 colleagues with the support from NCCPIM&TiP and IOM experts.

The trainings cover relevant international and national legal instruments such as the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its supplementary Protocols, Egypt’s Counter Trafficking and Counter Smuggling Laws, as well as challenges in application of the criminal code to cases of migration-related crimes.

The trainings were implemented with the contributions of the European Union, the Government of the United Kingdom, the United States’ Department of State and USAID. The capacity enhancement programme supports the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals. It is also in line with the objectives of Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS): Vision 2030, particularly its social justice pillar, and the National Strategies for Combatting Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons.
