IOM with the Egyptian Red Crescent Train Community-Based Organizations on Countering Trafficking in Persons

IOM and partners hold training to provide information on protection, counter trafficking and counselling skills.

Cairo, 15 July 2021- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Egypt, in collaboration with the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), has organized a training session to 19 ERC Community-based Organizations’ members on Protection and Countering Trafficking in Persons. IOM closely works with the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) thanks to an existing Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations.

The three-day training has provided information on protection, counter trafficking and counselling skills. This training has served in building up the capacities of Community-based Organizations’ members in identifying Victims of Trafficking and their protection needs. The main objective of the training was to strengthen the protection of migrants and the provision of aid to the vulnerable population. Additionally, the training has included introductory sessions on stress management, as well as interviewing and counselling skills.

“It is crucial for our work to increase our footprint to reach out to the maximum number of migrants and their host communities. It is only thanks to those close to our people of concern that we can provide the necessary assistance timely. It is always a pleasure working with the ERC and its community-based volunteers”, said Laurent de Boeck, Chief of Mission of IOM Egypt.

This training was made possible through the support offered by the Government of the Kingdom of The Netherlands under the project ‘Cooperation on Migration and Partnerships to Achieve Sustainable Solutions (COMPASS)’, together with the “Regional Development and Protection Programme for North Africa (RDPP)”, funded by the European Union.

“I would like to thank you all, and I extend my thanks and appreciation to all the facilitators working in the two organizations; the Egyptian Red Crescent and the International Organization for Migration, who provided the training with a degree of excellence for us as community leaders to serve our society.” said a Community Leader during the training sessions. “Communication is always a good tool for spreading humanity and cooperating with each other to learn and pass the information on the ground to our society”,

The training contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Goal 3 “Good Health”, Goal 8 “Decent Work and Economic Growth” specifically target 8.7 “End modern day slavery and human trafficking”, Goal 10 “Reduced Inequalities”. The training comes also in line with the achievement of the Global Compact for Migration Objective 10 “Prevent, combat and eradicate trafficking in persons in the context of international migration” and Objective 7 “Address and reduce vulnerabilities in migration”.
