IOM Egypt, NCCPIM & TIP Deliver Counter-trafficking Trainings to Civil Society Organizations
Cairo, 2 August 2017 - IOM Egypt, in cooperation with the National Coordination Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM & TIP), organized two trainings titled “Countering Trafficking in Persons and Providing Protection for Victims in Egypt” for 41 representatives from 32 civil society organizations operating in 12 governorates on 26 – 27 July and 31 July – 1 August 2017.
The trainings provided the participants with an overview of the national legislative framework related to trafficking in persons, such as Law 64/2010 on Combating and Preventing Trafficking in Persons and the 2016-2021 National Strategy on Preventing and Combating Human Trafficking.
The trainings strengthened the participants’ understanding of trafficking in persons and protection of victims. Informative sessions were led by representatives from the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, the Ministry of Social Solidarity and the Administrative Control Authority.
“Human trafficking remains a grave plague of modern society. By coordinating their intervention with governmental stakeholders, civil society plays a key role in the prevention of this crime, by informing and enhancing awareness of the communities, in addition to the identification of cases and in the provision of assistance services to the victims. Trainings strengthen the capacity of the civil society and enhance their role in facing human trafficking cases, making the response more comprehensive and effective,” said Andrea Dabizzi, Programme Manager of the Migrants Assistance Division at IOM Egypt.
The trainings were implemented within the framework of two IOM projects: “Support the Egyptian Government to update and implement the National Action Plan on Combating and Preventing Trafficking in Persons (NCCTIP) in Egypt,” funded by the European Union and “Strengthening Governmental Efforts to Combat Human Trafficking through Increased Prosecution and Enhanced Victim Protection in Egypt”, funded by the U.S. State Department Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration.
The trainings support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 16 Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies and Goal 17 Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development. The initiative is also in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030 of a fair interdependent society characterized by equal economic, social, political rights and opportunities realizing social inclusion.
