IOM Egypt Concludes the Third Edition of the Regional Certificate in Migration Governance and Celebrates the Graduation of 22 Officials
Cairo, 6 September 2020 – Following the great success of the first and second editions of the Regional Certificate in Migration Governance that took place in 2018 and 2019 that built the capacities of forty-one officials from the MENA region, IOM Egypt, in partnership with the American University in Cairo’s Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (AUC/CMRS) conclude the third edition of the certificate online, with twenty-two governmental and non – governmental officials working on migration-related issues participating from 30 August –3 September 2020.
The main goal of the certificate is to support participants from the region in becoming more aware of the multifaceted aspects of migration and the wide range of policy responses that can be considered in a comprehensive approach, to obtain analytical and practical capacities in dealing with migration, to enhance skills and knowledge in migration governance, to learn the latest insights and developments in strategic migration management, to network and share ideas with other participants, colleagues and stakeholders while obtaining an internationally recognized professional and academic qualification.
The third edition gathered a group of twenty-two participants representing Egypt`s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sudan`s Ministry of Labour and Social Development and Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, IOM Bahrain and the Philippines Embassy in Cairo.
The modules covered a variety of topics such as an introduction to migration trends and drivers, trafficking and smuggling of migrants, Global Compact for Safe and Orderly Migration (GCM), migration and development, labour migration and human mobility, international migration and refugee laws and Key Migration Terms. The sessions were conducted by CMRS professors and IOM professionals.
The Regional Certificate in Migration Governance supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal: 10.7 ‘facilitate orderly, safe, and responsible migration and mobility of people, including through implementation of planned and well-managed migration policies’ as well as Goal: 17 ‘Partnerships for the Goals’.
