IOM Egypt and AUC’s Center for Migration and Refugee Studies Launch the Third Edition of the Certificate in Migration Governance
Cairo, 28 October 2018 – After two successful editions where 57 officials graduated, IOM Egypt and the American University in Cairo (AUC)’s Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS) launched the third edition of the Certificate in Migration Governance (CMG) at the AUC Tahrir campus.
The CMG is a six-module learning programme designed for participants from governmental and non-governmental institutions in Egypt with an overall objective to support a whole-of-government approach towards migration governance. The learning programme covers the topics of international migration and refugee law; migration and development; labour mobility and human development; trafficking and smuggling; and migration management in crises. The sessions are delivered by AUC professors and IOM experts, which ensures that participants are provided both the academic knowledge as well as the field experience. The certificate is supported by the Government of Denmark, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and the Government of The Netherlands.
This year's certificate had 35 participants representing 19 key ministries and governmental institutions, and one non-governmental organization specialized government agencies, and representatives from Non-Governmental organizations all working on migration.
“IOM and AUC’s partnership on the third edition of the Certificate in Migration Governance highlights the continued importance of raising awareness about effective migration governance – the certificate also provides an important networking opportunity.”, said Ms. Kristiina Wells, Counter Trafficking Project Manager, IOM Egypt.
The Certificate in Migration Governance supports the Government of Egypt in its commitment to “elaborate and implement a comprehensive national and regional strategies on migration and mobility” (Action Plan of the Valletta Summit on Migration, Nov. 2015) and “a fair interdependent society characterized by equal economic, social, political rights and opportunities realizing social inclusion” by 2030 (Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy, Social Justice Pillar).
