IOM Egypt and the American University in Cairo Conclude the Third Edition of the Certificate in Migration Governance

Cairo, 26 March 2019 – As part of its capacity building portfolio, which includes trainings for Egyptian officials from governmental and non-governmental agencies, IOM Egypt and the American University in Cairo’s Center for Migration and Refugee Studies celebrated the closure of the third edition of the Certificate in Migration Governance, which started in October 2018.

Thirty-three Egyptian officials representing six ministries, ten governmental institutions and one Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) successfully completed the learning programme composed of six modules tackling different aspects of migration governance. The programme’s modules are delivered by AUC professors and IOM experts. The programme is supported by the Kingdom of Denmark, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

“The programme made us realize that the topic of migration is very close to us as professionals and individuals, we realized that we are all migrants or potential migrants”, said one of the participants.

The certificate in migration governance supports the Government of Egypt in its commitment to “elaborate and implement comprehensive national and regional strategies on migration and mobility” (Action Plan of the Valletta Summit on Migration, Nov. 2015) as well as to become “a fair interdependent society characterized by equal economic, social, political rights and opportunities realizing social inclusion” by 2030 (Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy: Vision 2030, Social Justice Pillar). It also supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 10.7: Facilitate orderly, safe, and responsible migration and mobility of people, including through implementation of planned and well-managed migration policies and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
