IOM Egypt and Al Schaduf For Agriculture and Trade Sign Service Agreement for the Implementation of project “Promoting Food Security and Income Generation for Migrants and Egyptian Host Communities Through Hydroponic Rooftop Farming”

Cairo, 26 April- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Egypt continues to direct its efforts in Egypt through engaging in local-level social and economic interventions to improve economic development and empower both migrants and host communities through promoting green livelihood opportunities.

Within the framework of the “Regional Development and Protection Programme - Phase II”, funded by the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa, IOM signed a new service agreement with Al Schaduf For Agriculture and Trade to implement a grant entitled “Promoting Food Security and Income Generation for Migrants and Egyptian Host Communities Through Hydroponic Rooftop Farming”.

The project kicks off this month with the installation of hydroponic farm kits on the rooftops of 20 residential buildings of selected beneficiary families. The project will be implemented for 10 migrant and 10 Egyptian households in three areas in Cairo. The farms are equipped with hydroponic farming systems that allow for the growth of high value crops all year round and will be tended to by selected beneficiaries, who will learn how to operate the hydroponic systems through intensive trainings. The trainings will be run by Al Schaduf and aim to allow beneficiaries to farm in a self-sustaining and independent manner.

The project will also aim to increase market linkages and value chain integration by connecting beneficiaries with interested buyers where their produce will be collected, packaged, and sold online and in supermarkets.

This project supports the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Goal 8: promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all, Goal 11: make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, and Goal 13: take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. It also comes in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for a society characterized by equal economic, social, political rights and opportunities realizing social inclusion.
