IOM, American University in Cairo Launch Fellowship Programme

Cairo, 10 September 2016 - In celebration of IOM’s global 65th anniversary and 25th anniversary in Egypt, IOM Egypt has announced a fully-funded fellowship programme in cooperation with the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies at the American University in Cairo (AUC).

The fellowship is offered to one academically outstanding Egyptian student interested in pursuing full time graduate studies in the field of Migration and Refugee Studies at AUC. The fellow will also intern at IOM on a part-time basis for the same duration of the degree course.

“We live in a changing world shaped by the movement of people everywhere. Movement exerts a substantial influence on economics, politics and society. We therefore need to develop a better understanding of contemporary migration and refugee issues and the relationship between migration and development to maximize its positive impact whilst minimizing its potential costs,” said IOM Egypt Head of Office Amr Taha.

The cooperation between IOM and AUC dates back to 2001 when IOM offered an Ethiopian migrant a fellowship to complete a Migration and Refugee Studies Graduate Diploma.

Founded in 1919, AUC is the Middle East’s leading English-language university and a center of intellectual, social and cultural life in the Arab world. It hosts a Center for Migration and Refugee Studies that aims to further academic knowledge and understanding of refugee and migration movements in the region.
