The European Union and IOM in Egypt Launch a Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration in North Africa

Cairo, 15 January 2020 - The International Organization for Migration initiated the launch for the European Union and IOM Joint Initiative for ‘Migrant Protection and Reintegration in North Africa’.

The Head of Migrant Protection and Assistance in IOM Egypt, Andrea Dabizzi, introduced the initiative to the Government of Egypt and the EU’s representatives with a review about the project activities in Egypt and its impact on the migrants and their host communities.

The representative of Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated his speech by expressing the will of the Egyptian Government to further cooperate with IOM, specifically with the returnees to start new projects in order to support themselves upon return.

Presentations on the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programme were given by IOM staff to highlight the challenges and achievements of the last year and introduce planned activities for the current year. The presentations were followed by Qs and As on the programme.

The initiative supports the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth and Goal 10, Target 10.7: Facilitate orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration and mobility of people, including through the implementation of planned and well-managed migration policies.
