Cairo – On April 23 and 24 2018, IOM Egypt held a capacity building training to enhance stakeholders’ capacity to improve services provided to migrants on the ground. . The training, facilitated by Paola Pace, Senior Regional Programme Manager at IOM Tunisia, provided attendees with basic knowledge on migration to counter stereotypes and negative narratives, in support of community cohesion between migrants and Egyptian host communities. Partners from civil society organizations and the private sector were introduced to international migration trends, international migration laws, media reporting and its role in changing the negative discourse on migrants and migration.

Attendees discussed their needs in capacity building on migration issues and a set of recommendations by IOM and partners, including legal advice on migration in Egypt, case management, project development, implementation, and reporting. Mohamed Abdelhalim Mahmoud, a representative of the Egyptian Youth Council for Development said, “I look forward to future events like this one, especially with experts in the legal field, as this would greatly improve the services and counseling we offer to migrants.”

The training was held within the framework of the EU-funded “Regional Development and Protection Programme for North Africa (RDPP NA)” and supports the accomplishment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially number 4- Quality Education, 10- Reduced Inequalities and 17- Partnerships for the Goals. It also contributes to the fulfillment of Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy: Vision 2030, in particular the Education and Training Pillars.
