259 Resettled Refugees from Egypt Arrive in Germany

Cairo, 10 October 2019 – Two-hundred fifty-nine refugees departed from Cairo to Hannover in Germany on a charter flight with International Organization for Migration (IOM) support. This is the second charter flight; the first charter took place on 11 September 2019 with 246 refugees on board.

The resettled group comprised refugees from Syria, South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia. Among the group were 78 children and 16 infants.

During the resettlement procedure, IOM supported the receiving countries, assisted with visa document processing, conducted health assessments, provided pre-departure orientation courses, organized flights and escorted the refugees until their arrival in Germany.

The process of resettlement involves the cooperation between various actors. In this case, IOM worked closely with the Federal German Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Government of Egypt and Caritas Germany.

After their arrival in Germany, the refugees will travel onwards to another location in Germany where accommodation and integration courses will be provided before they settle in the country.

There will be two more charter flights scheduled to depart on 29 October 2019 and 21 November 2019 to Germany, with over 500 refugees on board.
