150 Sudanese Sudan Migrants Return Home with the Assistance of IOM Egypt

Cairo, 5 November 2020 – One hundred and fifty Sudanese migrants returned home to Khartoum from Cairo on 5 November, on a charter flight facilitated by IOM Egypt under its CARE II project that is funded by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany. 

At the onset of the pandemic, many migrants found themselves stranded and unable to return home, due to the government-imposed travel restrictions and airspace closures.

IOM Egypt Meets with Embassies in Egypt to Foster Cooperation

Cairo, 15 November - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Egypt held a meeting with representatives of eight (8) African Embassies in Egypt to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in support for stranded and vulnerable migrants.

During the meeting, participants were introduced the IOM’s overall programmes and services, including the direct assistance and Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programmes, which are benefiting thousands of migrants in Egypt.

Cairo, 4 November 2020 - IOM Egypt, in partnership with the Government of Egypt and its counterparts, the Ministry of Social Solidarity (MOSS), the National Coordinating Committee for Combatting and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM&TIP), the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM), the Embassy of Denmark, and the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), attended a press conference to inaugurate the opening of the first government-run shelter for victims of trafficking (VoT) in Egypt.

With Winter Around the Corner, IOM Egypt Distributes Winter Essentials to Migrant Communities in Alexandria, under the #WarmAlexandria Campaign

Alexandria, 4 November 2020 - IOM Egypt distributed 200 blankets to vulnerable migrants from the South Sudanese community in Alexandria, as part of the #AlexandriaWarm campaign. The Organization distributed an additional 100 blankets to the Syrian community in Alexandria in cooperation with Soryana-Alexandria, in response to the widespread request for blankets and other winter essentials from the migrant communities. This initiative takes place annually during the Winter season, as Alexandria is a coastal city and is prone to heavy rains and strong winds.

Cairo, 22 October 2020 - IOM Egypt and the Office of the Prosecutor General (OPG), in cooperation with the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM&TIP), organized two virtual trainings for public prosecutors during 19- 22 October, 2020, keeping in view the COVID-19 precautions. The trainings focused on enhancing capacities of forty public prosecutors from Cairo and Giza, on Investigating and Prosecuting the crimes of smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons.

IOM Egypt Launches a Digital Campaign on the Stories of Migrants During the COVID-19 Pandemic 

Cairo, 25 October 2020 - Today, IOM Egypt is launching its campaign “Our Story; Youth, Migration and Covid-19) online. COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in severe economic and social impacts around the world. Migrant youths are amongst the vulnerable groups affected by the disruption caused by the pandemic. Under these circumstances, it is important that youths, including migrant youths, are heard alongside other community voices in the rollout of health and non-health interventions in response to COVID-19 pandemic “Leaving No One Behind”.
