IOM Egypt Response Towards the Violence in Gaza

As of the 24th of May, the escalation of hostilities in Gaza has claimed the lives of at least 259 Palestinians and injured over 8,000 people, as declared by the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Since the start of the escalation, 285 housing units have been severely damaged, and rendered uninhabitable, leaving over 2,500 people homeless. Additionally, over 77,000 people have been displaced, most of them children, and more than 40 schools operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) are now serving as shelters.

IOM Egypt continues its support in providing livelihood opportunities for migrants and Egyptians through the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI) apprenticeship and hiring scheme

Cairo, May 12, 2021 – IOM continues to support livelihoods promotion and migrant integration through increased social cohesion between migrant and Egyptian host communities. The initiative, implemented with FEI entitled, Providing Livelihood opportunities for Migrants and Egyptians through Apprenticeship Scheme and Job Referral Mechanisms” aims to provide an apprenticeship scheme for 100 participants from migrant and Egyptian host communities. Livelihoods focus on vocational training and on the job skills training.

IOM Egypt Works Towards Reaching Sustainable Solutions for Stranded Migrants

Cairo, 7 April 2021- Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) is considered a vital approach within migration governance. The AVRR programmes are implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in cooperation with its Member States. It is aimed at supporting stranded migrants who are unable to remain in host and transit countries and decided to return to their home country. It offers logistical or financial support to migrants, including re-integration back home. AVRR works to achieve sustainable solutions for migrants in need.

Cairo, February 2020 - IOM EGYPT launched a Health Surveillance of Travelers at Points of Entry in Response to Emerging Respiratory Viruses, Including COVID-19 course which provides guidance to public health authorities at points of entry (POEs [airports, seaports and ground crossings]) to consider while responding to the cross-border spread of emerging respiratory viruses such as COVID-19.

Strengthening Capacities of Egyptian Authorities on Countering Smuggling of Migrants and Trafficking in Persons

Cairo, 28 - 30 November - 13-15 December 2020 - Egypt IOM Egypt and the National Council of Judicial Studies (NCJS), in cooperation with the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM&TIP), organized two workshops for judges during the period between 28-30 November 2020 and 13-15 December 2020. The workshops were conducted in Cairo and Alexandria respectively.

2020 Global Migration Film Festival Opens, Linking a Worldwide Audience to Cinema and Human Mobility

Geneva – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) this week (30 November) is launching its annual Global Migration Film Festival, presenting five selected films for screening worldwide. This will mark IOM´s fifth year presenting documentaries, features and short films that explore the themes of migration and human mobility.

IOM Egypt Trains 49 Forensic Experts on Passport Examination Procedures

Cairo, 29 November 2020 - IOM Egypt organized two trainings on passport examination procedures for the Egyptian Forensic Medicine Authority (EFMA). The training accommodated 49 forensic experts from seven governorates.

The six-day trainings were facilitated by Ms. Sara Pownall, an IOM consultant in Border Management and Immigration. Participants acquired in-depth and hands-on experience on passport examination, using verification equipment to identify forged and counterfeit documents.
