Training Workshop for Social Workers on Trafficking in Persons by NCCPIM&TIP and IOM in Cooperation with the Ministry of Social Solidarity
Cairo, 13 January 2019 – The National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM&TIP) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Solidarity (MoSS) organized a three-day training workshop for MoSS affiliated social workers on trafficking in persons. The workshop familiarized the participants with trafficking in persons that includes the legal and operational framework in Egypt, as well as tools on identification of victims of trafficking and how to provide the necessary response to their needs. The workshop was held from 13 to 15 January 2019 in Cairo and was attended by 31 participants from 13 governorates in Egypt.
During her opening remarks, the chairperson of NCCPIM&TIP, Ambassador Naela Gabr, affirmed that combating trafficking in persons is an important national concern, and that victim protection is guaranteed by law. Ambassador Gabr also mentioned that the Government of Egypt is committed to establishing a shelter for the victims of trafficking where the social workers will play an important role in victim support and rehabilitation. Mr. Andrea Dabizzi, Head of Migrant Protection and Assistance Unit at IOM Egypt, reiterated that IOM is dedicated to supporting the efforts of the Government of Egypt and NCCPIM&TIP to prevent and combat trafficking in persons.
The workshop was organized with the support of the Government of Denmark and it supports the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 3: Good health and well-being, Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth, Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries, Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development and Goal 17: Partnerships for the goals.
The event is also in line with the objectives of Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS): Vision 2030, particularly its social dimension.
