IOM Holds a Training Workshop for Egyptian Prosecutors on Investigating and Prosecuting Migrant Smuggling in Luxor

Luxor, 30 January 2019 - IOM Egypt and the Office of the Prosecutor General (OPG), in cooperation with the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM & TIP), organized a two-day training workshop for prosecutors on Investigating and Prosecuting Migrant Smuggling. The workshop is part of the longstanding cooperation between IOM and the OPG. It was organized in Luxor in order to facilitate the participation of prosecutors who work in Upper Egyptian Governorates.

“The role of prosecutors is extremely important -not only in- fighting the criminal networks, but also in sharing information between governments and institutions, at a national and international level. We are very happy that we collaborate with the OPG and the NCCPIM & TIP.” Said Mr. Laurent De Boeck, IOM Egypt’s Chief of Mission in his message to participants.

Training sessions focused on discussing relevant national and international legal frameworks; participants also discussed national coordination mechanisms, the National Strategy and the National Action Plan to Counter Smuggling of Migrants and international judicial cooperation among other topics relevant to countering smuggling of migrants. Furthermore, the training included discussions on practical case studies and best practices from national and international contexts, victim and witness protection safeguards, as well as other practical training relevant to the role of prosecutors in investigating the crime of smuggling of migrants.

This training was made possible by the contribution of the Government of the United Kingdom.

The training contributes to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals. It is also in-line with the objectives of Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS): Vision 2030, particularly its social justice pillar.
