Cairo/Lisbon, 17 December 2018The UN Migration Agency (IOM Egypt) and the Embassy of Portugal successfully facilitated the resettlement of 33 refugees of several nationalities such as Syrian, Somali, Sudanese and South Sudanese from Egypt to Portugal. A group of 26 individuals boarded a flight from Cairo on the 17th of December, transited in Frankfurt and landed in Lisbon. While another group of 7 individuals traveled on 18th of December, transited in Istanbul and landed in Lisbon, Portugal.

In summer 2018, Embassy of Portugal has started accepting a total of 404 refugees from Egypt to be resettled in Portugal, divided into three groups and traveling within 22-month period. The individuals, referred by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and were accepted for resettlement to Portugal.

IOM provided medical screenings, pre-departure assistance, and a pre-departure orientation training for all refugees aged 15 years and older.

Portugal is one of over 20 resettlement countries for whom IOM conducts pre-departure orientation. Cultural Orientation is a pre-departure and post-arrival education program designed for refugees resettling in Portugal. The programme helps refugees acquire the knowledge and skills needed to adapt to their new lives and become productive citizens who are fully integrated into their communities. The orientation also helps manage realistic expectations and offers refugees the opportunity to raise questions, concerns and seek clarification on topics related to their resettlement.

IOM Egypt, in coordination with the Embassy of Portugal and UNHCR received support and assistance from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in facilitating the issuance of the refugees’ exit permits.

The initiative works towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 8: Promote sustained inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all and Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries.
