IOM Egypt Distributes Blankets to the Migrant Communities as Part of the ‘Warm Alexandria‘ Initiative

Alexandria, 20 February 2020 - The International Organization for Migration has finalized the winter campaign in Alexandria, titled ‘Warm Alexandria’ by distributing 240 blankets to the Sudanese and Yemeni communities. In addition to the 480 blankets distributed to the South Sudanese and Syrian communities in Alexandria in the fourth quarter of 2019.

With the increasing number of migrants along with their hard-living conditions, blankets are the most requested Non-Food Item (NFI) from the migrant communities in Alexandria as the city is located in the north of Egypt where the weather is substantially colder than in the rest of the country.

IOM Egypt started its activities in Alexandria by assisting migrants from South Sudan then expanded its outreach to include migrants from all over the region such as: Libya Sudan, Syria and Yemen. IOM provides different type of assistance that includes, financial, housing, medical and educational assistance.  IOM also assisted many migrants in Alexandria to voluntary return to their home countries such as: Algeria, Cameron, Sudan and South Sudan.

Furthermore, IOM held many medical and legal awareness raising sessions in Alexandria in order to provide legal services to register newborn babies and help in any legal consultation.

This initiative is in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 3: ‘Good health and wellbeing’, Goal 10: ‘Reduced inequalities.  It is also in-line with the objectives of Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS): Vision 2030, particularly its social justice pillar.
