IOM Egypt Conducts Training on Health Surveillance of Travelers at Points of Entry in Response to Emerging Respiratory Viruses, Including COVID-19
Cairo, February 2020 - IOM EGYPT launched a Health Surveillance of Travelers at Points of Entry in Response to Emerging Respiratory Viruses, Including COVID-19 course which provides guidance to public health authorities at points of entry (POEs [airports, seaports and ground crossings]) to consider while responding to the cross-border spread of emerging respiratory viruses such as COVID-19. It identifies the capacities and mechanisms to improve public health surveillance and to facilitate the detection and management of travelers suspected to have COVID-19 at these points of entry (POE).
The training provides recommendations to support establishing and building of relationships between public health authorities and concerned stakeholders at POE and the National Health Surveillance Authority. It also provides an overview of the emerging respiratory virus diseases, including COVID-19 and guidance on how to properly communicate risk and share information among staff and travelers at POE.
The course is intended for personnel who perform administrative and front-line duties at points of entry, including public health authorities involved in managing public health events at POE, entry point operators, conveyances operators and other stakeholders at POE (such as immigration and customs authorities).
At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to explain why emerging respiratory viruses, including COVID-19, are a global threat to human health, identify the capacities to be in place for strengthening health surveillance and detection of travelers suspected to have COVID-19 at POE; put in place mechanisms that facilitate the detection and management of travelers suspected to have COVID-19 at POE, effectively communicate with travelers and staff regarding COVID-19 risk, required information and related messages at POE.
A certificate of participation is available to participants who score at least 80% of the total points available across all the quizzes. The course is available in Arabic and English.
