  • Egypt Ranks Top Sending Country of UMCs to Italy

    Cairo, 12 June 2016 – A total of 1,815 Egyptian irregular migrants landed on the Italian shores including 1,147 (78%) unaccompanied migrant children (UMCs) from January to May 2015, ranking Egypt as the tenth top sending country of irregular Egyptian migrants to Italy, and the top sending of unaccompanied migrant children.

    Geneva, 9 June 2016 - H.E. Ambassador Laura Thompson, Deputy Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), met with Minister Mohamed Saafan, the Egyptian Minister of Manpower on Tuesday, 7 June in Geneva.   • IOM Fears 320 Migrants Missing in Mediterranean as Deaths Approach 3,000 in 2016

    Italy - IOM reports an estimated 206,400 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 through 5 June, arriving in Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Spain. No fatalities have been recorded in the Mediterranean since Saturday, 4 June. Deaths so far this year are 2,809, compared with 1,838 through the first six months of 2015. In other words, fatalities in the Mediterranean in 2016 are nearly 1,000 more than last year’s mid-year total, even though we now are some three weeks shy of 2016’s mid-year point.

  • Celebrating and Taking Stock – START Holds its Last Workshop in Egypt

    Suez, 31 May 2016 - The last workshop of the Labour Migration and Human Development Component of START programme took place on May 30-31 in Ain Sokhna. The workshop gathered the programme's partners and service providers in Egypt, including Education for Employment Egypt, El Mahrousa Center for Socioeconomic Development, Innovety, Microsoft, Nahdet El Mahrousa, and the National Employment Pact. The objective was to celebrate the completion of the activities and take stock of achieved results and lessons learned.
