Certificate in Migration Governance: An Eye-opening Experience
Although migration is continuously becoming an increasingly crucial topic, especially among professionals working in development, many are still not familiar with key aspects of the issue. In efforts to alter this, the Certificate in Migration Governance was developed as a joint effort between the International Organization for Migration in Egypt and the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS) at the American University in Cairo.
The courses provide an introduction to the topic of migration, and delves deeper into several topics including the laws and development of migration worldwide, as well as labor migration, trafficking and migration management in crises, amid others.
Among the participants in the first round was Mr. Karim Abul-Enein, First Secretary at the European Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Abul-Enein described the experience as an exceptional opportunity to explore the topic of migration, along with its legalities and latest developments.
“I found it helpful how the courses shed some light on all partner organizations concerned with migration and the roles they play in migrants’ lives,” Said Mr. Abul-Enein. “It was also very useful to understand the situation of refugees, in terms of how they integrate and contribute to society.”
Taking into account the issues that migrants often face, Mr. Abul-Enein recommended that the courses also address issues such as media portrayals and stereotypes revolving around migrants and asylum seekers.
Familiarity and exposure to migration are on the rise and so is the importance of grasping the multi-faceted nature of the topic, particularly for specialists working in the field. To accommodate the ever-changing nature of migration, professionals worldwide like Mr. Abul-Enein are constantly pursuing opportunities to learn, understand, and continue to be efficient and conscious contributors.
